My research interests are focused on (i) advanced nanoscale materials characterization via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic transmission electron microscopy (DTEM), (ii) in-situ monitoring of phase transformations in crystalline and amorphous materials, (iii) the study of nucleation and growth phenomena in materials used for aerospace/automotive industries and (iv) structure – property relationships in fibre optics (Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) and Fibre Amplifiers). As a scientist and researcher, I have always felt that the most productive research is to experience a greater understanding and enhancement of the general techniques that are used for solving problems. However, as scientists, we are often forced to make trade-off decisions between spending time developing a deeper understanding and using simplified models and creating quick fix practical implementations that are often situation specific.

My research work has always focused on bridging the gap between these two seemingly contrary cost targets and reliability. The solution to these problems is to develop new materials by engineering the structure and properties of materials.
