Recent scientific advances permit the ordered growth of a single layer of polymer on a surface. This type of growth could potentially have significant applicability to technological or industrial processes, and understanding the conditions under which we may efficiently produce such types of structures is the first step. Our research focuses on the catalytic growth of polymer structures in 1 and 2D, with specific attention to controlling the inhibition and acceleration of the polymerization-reaction. Our most recent advances have demonstrated polymer growth at the surface of single-crystal noble metals. My current focus is to extend this project towards more technologically useful domains – that is, to replicate the 1D and 2D growth motifs onto insulating substrates such as metal oxides, in order to create supported layers of conductive polymer.
